Hardware

The computer network of the software department forms a segment within the network of the Institute of Cybernetics (IOC). This segment consists of the following computers: the UNIX server (at the same time also mailserver and Webserver for all the IOC) is Sun Enterprise 250 with two 400 MHz processors, 512 MB main of memory, and about 54 GB of disk space; and workstations: one Sun SPARCstation 20 with four 100 MHz RT625 processors, 128 MB main of memory and about 41 Gb of disk space; one Sun Ultra 5, one Sun Ultra 1 Model 140, one Sun SPARCstation 10, five Sun SPARCstation 5, two Sun SPARCstation 4, four Sun SPARCstation IPX, one Sun SPARCstation Classic, one Sun SPARCstation X, two Sun SPARCstation 1, two Sun 3 station, and fifteen IBM PC type computers (see figure). The computers are connected to the worldwide Internet via ethernet cable or twisted pair cable and a communication switch Catalyst 5500. The computers are also available via modem. In the network segment of the software department the Sun computers and IBM PCs communicate using the TCP/IP protocols.

Twelve Sun SPARCstations are placed in the computer classroom of Tallinn Technical University (TTU) located in room B427 of IOC since some of them have been obtained under Tempus project JEP-06145 strictly for educational purposes and as a whole can serve as a lab for computer science. Other Sun SPARCstations are distributed to the rooms of the software department. For printing from the Sun computers one dot matrix printer CI600Q, a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4MP, a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4050 with Duplexer, and an Apple Laserwriter II are available. The Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4MP and the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4050 are available via HP printservers JetDirect 300X too. From other rooms of the software department the Sun computers can be reached via four VT200terminals. The Sun 3 computers are connected to the Sun network server as an X terminal. The Sun network server has a 5 Gbyte 4 mm tape drive for backup purposes connected to it. The Sun SPARCstation 20 has a CD-ROM and CD-Writer connected to it. For multimedia applications the videocameras are connected to the Sun Ultra 5 and to one PC. To transfer files to a non-networked personal computer or to store individual user files, four Sun computers possess a floppy disk drive.

The IBM PC type computers are distributed to different rooms of the software department and they form logically a separate network controlled from another, a PC-type server by the MicroSoft NT . For printing a MINOLTA DIALTA DI152 is connected to this server. In addition one of the IBM PC type computers has a color Canon BJC-610 printer available only to the host and one has a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 4c available only to the host. From each IBM PC type computer it is possible to open an alphanumeric terminal window or X Windows (X-Win32) to work on any Sun station in the segment.

The Sun SPARCstations and MicroSoft NT server get power via UPS and the power management software for UNIX LanSafe III is used.
