ABSTRACT. The importance of nonlinear mathematical models in biomedical
applications is growing during the last decade. The group of nonlinear
dynamics in the Department of Mechanics and Applied Mechanics of the
Institute of Cybernetics has been interested in this topic from the viewpoint
of fractality and chaotic regimes. In this Report, current results are briefly
presented. J. Engelbrecht gives a brief analysis of nonlinear systems in
medicine. J. Kalda shows how to calculate the fractal dimensions of blood-
vessel systems and lungs . O. Kongas and R. v. Hertzen have developed a
model describing cardiac arrhythmias. The report is composed by three abstracts
of invited presentations for the 10th Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical
Engineering and the 1st International Conference on Bioelectromagnetism,
June 9-13, 1996, Tampere, Finland.
