ABSTRACT. Using a reasonable physical assumption a simple model
of the hammer felt is developed. The model is in a good agreement
with an experimental force versus deformation relationships
obtained both for the various numbers of hammers and the
stiffness of the felt. Such a model allows to calculate the
hammer-string interaction for all notes of a grand piano by
evaluating only one parameter - the Young's modulus of the felt
material. This gives the opportunity to choose the hammers to the
certain piano by matching the masses of the hammer and the felt
stiffness and to improve the quality of the instrument.
